Welcome Note
"Change your opinions, keep to your principles; change your leaves, keep intact your roots"-Victor Hugo
We are who we are because of our environment, our family, the education we received, our country, our culture. We would not be a society without culture, and we would not be the individuals we are today without our background. That being said, we can see how important it is to never forget where we come from!
Easier said than done right? Staying in touch with ourselves and our values can be a challenging task when all that used to reinforce our behaviors is now a thousand miles away. It is even harder to stick to our roots when some of us only know about them through the millions of story our family tells us about a place we might even perceive as a foreign country. Those are issues and obstacles faced by a lot of us Haitian growing up so far away from Haiti.
This is one of the reasons why at Saint Johns University, we have a Haitian Society. The purpose of it is to keep Haitian on campus in contact with each other, in touch with their background, learn about Haiti, celebrate what links us the the rest of the world, as well as what makes us unique individuals.
Well, what better way to do that than to have a blog! The purpose of that blog is for it to be the glue between the E-Board and the members of our society, to promote our events, to create a fun and interactive relationship within it's members. Also, this blog will serve for other organization on or off our campus to follow us, learn about us, and join us! We will discuss topics of interest, have posts about the history of Haiti as well as a few news updates concerning what is happening now. Most importantly, we will have news update about what our society is up to, as well as summaries and pictures of our events. We will also have information featuring Haitian artists known internationally, but also the artist that we have as members of the Haitian society.
As you can see, this blog has very ambitious goals, but with your help and participation, we will make it a great tool for us to have fun with!
On that note, on behaf of the Haitian Society E-Board, we welcome you, and hope to have a fun and fruitful year in your company!
